Pearls were once thought to be the tears of gods; Now, pearls symbolize innocence and purity. Pearls dissolved in wine were supposed to be curative, primarily because pearls were costly and therefore must have strong powers. Perhaps the minerals in the pearls had a tonic effect. A symbol of water and the moon, pearls are strongly feminine stones.
For the alchemists gold represented the spiritual treasure that was gained by transforming the spirit. In mythology, it appears as the spiritual prize that is gained once the dragons and monsters of ignorance are overcome
